TikTok has grown explosively in the past few years, becoming one of the most downloaded apps in more than 130 countries. Creative content from brands, influencers and fans have exploded, and the parent company Bytedance is now in the league of tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent. Yet few professionals understand TikTok’s potential implications.

The platform uses machine learning and AI to find out what videos are more attractive and will gain traction, and its algorithm have people hooked on the short video format. In 2020 an average user spent more time on TikTok than any other platform, beating out both Facebook, Instagram and Youtube.

What is next? The Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin, is rolling out its own payment service that will rival the existing Wechat Pay and Alipay in China. The purpose is to create a new ecosystem of entertainment, social media, music and e-commerce.

Matthew Brennan opinions have been featured across global media including Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, BBC, The Financial Times and Forbes. Originally from London, England, Brennan speaks fluent Mandarin Chinese having been based in mainland China for 16 years, many of which were spent building localized software products for the K12 education market. He is the organizer of one of China’s largest annual digital marketing conferences for international brands, and as a keynote speaker has delivered hundreds of presentations for companies including Google, Tencent, Walmart, Visa, LinkedIn, and Boston Consulting Group.

Line Heidenheim Juul

Director of operation, Shanghai Office

Line Heidenheim Juul is a sinologist and leader and has focused on China since 2007. Line has her daily work as Director of Operation for China Experience in China, with a permanent base in Shanghai. Line holds a Master of China studies, speaks Mandarin and has studied at the prestigious Qinghua and Zhejiang University in Beijing and Hangzhou. Line has previously written a thesis on social media and news in China.

In her recent role as “chief connector” she has focused on following the explosive development of Chinese tech companies as well as the success of Nordic and European businesses in the Middle Kingdom.
