TikTok has grown explosively in the past few years, becoming one of the most downloaded apps in more than 130 countries. Creative content from brands, influencers and fans have exploded, and the parent company Bytedance is now in the league of tech giants like Alibaba and Tencent. Yet few professionals understand TikTok’s potential implications.
The platform uses machine learning and AI to find out what videos are more attractive and will gain traction, and its algorithm have people hooked on the short video format. In 2020 an average user spent more time on TikTok than any other platform, beating out both Facebook, Instagram and Youtube.
What is next? The Chinese version of TikTok, Douyin, is rolling out its own payment service that will rival the existing Wechat Pay and Alipay in China. The purpose is to create a new ecosystem of entertainment, social media, music and e-commerce.
